Technic (443 parts)
Technic is a system unto itself, with a focus on connecting parts using pins and axles, but you will find plenty of Technic parts with studs as well.
Modern Technic sets include very few Classic (or 'System') parts containing studs, because they have moved towards an engineering-focused building system that abandons the awkward 5:6 ratio of classic bricks in favor of a 3-dimensional grid based on the width of a plate (5 units).
A large selection of Technic parts with studs remain in production for a completely different reason... Classic 'System-based' LEGO sets have adopted Technic as the primary way to add interactive play features and a critical tool in making models stronger.
It is interesting to see how far Technic has evolved away from the classic Technic brick. In recent years, there has been a push to make Technic sets more realistic, which has resulted in a huge number of Technic 'panel' elements which can give the exterior of the model exactly the right shape. This is especially true in the high-end Technic supercars which need to match the appearance of a complex curved vehicle.
