The larger 'ball' and smaller 'towball' connections can be used to attach parts at any angle.

These parts are especially useful for building organic forms, since they can be posed in a wide range of positions.

I have heard from several LEGO Masters contestants that the smaller towball parts often ran out in the brick pit.
