This hub is widely used in Technic sets due to the generous number of Technic Pin connections, and the larger AA batteries which allow models to run a lot longer than with the hubs which use AAA batteries.

Earlier versions of this part have a clip on the battery pack (part 22127) while newer versions attach with a screw (part 85824).
