9V electronics use a clever connector that embeds wires into the sides of a standard LEGO stud.

The 9V system was used for a long time (1992-2013). It included everything from simple battery-powered electronics to the original Mindstorms RCX (the pioneering system for creating your own robots using LEGO).

The 9v Train Speed Regulator remains popular today because it allows you to power 9v electronics from a wall outlet, and it has a speed control.
