Jumpers offer a 1/2 stud offset in one or both directions.
Due to the unusual 5:6 ratio of a LEGO Brick, this shift of ½ the width of a plate works out to 1¼ of the thickness of a plate.
The ability to create offsets that are a fraction of a plate in size makes Jumpers very useful. It also makes them very frustrating as they can result in small gaps that are hard to fill.
